Contemporary Glass: Seattle and Beyond
This panel brings together an archivist, a librarian, a curator, an educator and an artist, each working with some aspect of contemporary glass and glassmaking. Perry Price, Director of Education at the American Craft Council, will discuss the history of studio glass, recounting how glassmaking moved out of a factory setting and into the artist's studio. Price will also talk about the current state of art criticism for glass and other crafts. Ken Clark, archivist for artist Dale Chihuly, will speak on his experience working for a living artist. Clark will also discuss how he uses information in unique ways as part of Chihuly's team. Beth Hylen, Reference Librarian at the Corning Museum of Glass' Rakow Research Library will discuss resources available for glass and decorative arts researchers. Jim Baker, Executive Director of the Pilchuck Glass School will address the challenges of glass art and craft education, and how a school like Pilchuck differs from a university or design school. Walter Lieberman, a glass artist and longtime lecturer at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, will discuss “Growing up Seattle: A brief history of the Northwest glass scene.”  Following the presentations, the audience will be invited to participate in a moderated Q&A. Attendees will leave with a broader understanding of the field of glass and a list of insights and resources to share with their own users. The session is sponsored by RISS and the Dec Arts SIGs.
